Digging

A spiral of endless emotion
Trying and failing
Hiding in the darkness
Trying to change

Halfway through I can’t find go
Or even know the game
The secrets of success
Buried deep for me to find

I dig and dig
Oh, when will my shovel hit?
When will I tap the line?
February 1997

I was at the 1997 Drake Writer’s Conference when I wrote this poem. There was a poet there giving a seminar who did an exercise where she traded us a verse of hers for a verse of ours. Her verse that she traded to me for my verse is italicized.
